An example of bar coded samples in a bar coded container
The UK manufacturing subsidiary of the world leader in its sector uses a SAP ERP system to control its operations. SAP generates production orders for customers' sales orders. The system prints bar coded labels for samples but does not track their status or movements in and out of refrigerated storage.
Problem
Reference samples to match with current production batches were hard to find. There were delays in the laboratory. The manual status recording system was not 100% reliable, introducing a risk of non-compliant supplies to customers.
Solution
The Codetrack solution uses several wireless terminals to capture data in real time. To track every movement technicians scan the SAP barcode on the sample and the barcode at the new location. They also use the terminal to record any change in the status of a sample, including disposal.
When the laboratory receives a new production sample, the terminal guides the technician to the location of the reference sample. Scanning the barcode on the sample confirms its identity and status, fit for use.
Back in the laboratory technicians scan the barcode on the reference sample back into SAP to link it to the current production sample for analysis. This assures the company and its customers of quality, continuity and traceability.
The original system was in use for well over ten years. Codeway has recently updated the solution to a Microsoft Azure cloud database with Android touch terminals for data capture. Technicians are now able to use the system in satellite production units as well as the main facility.
